This is one of a series of tables covering the post-1930 period, and if you have not already read the information on the master page of the set, you are advised to do so.
This table is a chronological listing of the start and end dates of the various exchanges that are included. A description of the methods used to compile this table and an explanation of the format are given here. This particular table is a compilation restricted to the borough of Manhattan, using the B list from the directories. (For an explanation of the terminology, see the main chronology page.) In order to access the table compiled from the A and Z list (which is restricted to the early 1930s), you can click the appropriate links.
For each directory listing, to the left of the directory date information,
there is found a notation as to whether the A, B, and Z lists or
only the B and Z lists are extant for the directory with that date.
(If the B list is the only one available, this will also be shown.)
Clicking on the letter A or Z will switch you to the city-wide table
prepared from those two lists.

NOTE 1: A listing is given for LOngacre 3 in the Summer 1931 directory, but it is gone from the B list in the Winter 1931-1932 directory and from the A and Z lists by the Summer 1932 directory. The exchange resumes in the Winter 1936-1937 directory. More research is necessary, though this table reflects these listings.
NOTE 2: Hugh Hamilton's list shows GIbraltar 2 as a carry-over from the earlier series, and only GIbraltar 7 as new in Early 1931. However, neither GIbraltar 2 nor 7 is actually shown in the Winter 1930-1931 directory. On the other hand, neither FItzroy 8, FLint 4, LIverpool 8, nor WHitehall 4 is shown in Hugh Hamilton's list, but they are shown in the Winter 1930-1931 directory.
NOTE 3: The UNderhill 7 exchange was shown in the Winter 1931-1932 directory but not in any other directory before or after. It is shown here as started late 1931 and ending early 1932, but more likely it was planned but never started.
NOTE 4: For some reason, two directories were issued, both showing a "corrected-to" date of Nov. 2, 1942. One shows the cover date of December, 1942; the other is labeled "1943 issue."
NOTE 5: Both the MArble 7 and LOrraine 2 exchanges were carried in both the Manhattan and Bronx directories. By comparing the Summer-Fall 1945 Bronx and Manhattan directories, which had MArble 7 but not LOrraine 2, with the Winter-Spring 1946 Bronx and Manhattan directories, which had LOrraine 2 but not MArble 7, it is concluded that the change-over took place after May 1, 1945 ("corrected-to" date of the Summer-Fall 1945 Manhattan directory) but before October 22, 1945 ("corrected-to" date of the Winter-Spring 1946 Bronx directory).
NOTE 6: Although the B list in the directory dated September 1947 still shows ACademy 4, AShland 4, and EDgecombe 4, in fact all subscribers who have telephones with these exchange names in the Fall-Winter 1946 directory are shown with the exchanges changed to UNiversity 4, MUrray Hill 3, and WAdsworth 6, respectively in the September 1947 directory. These exchanges are consequently shown on the "ended 1946-1947" line because this appears to be the correct end date despite the B list entries for September 1947.
NOTE 7: The B list in the directory dated
May 1948 indicates the discontinuance of the CAthedral 8 exchange. And in fact,
nearly all telephone numbers which had been in this exchange were converted to
MOnument 2 telephones in that directory. But the subscriber listings continue to
show a very small number of CAthedral 8 numbers (I have spotted two
in a selection of a few dozen pages of the May 1948 Manhattan directory.)
