This is one of a series of tables covering the post-1930 period, and if you have not already read the information on the master page of the set, you are advised to do so.
This table is a chronological listing of the start and end dates of the various exchanges that are included. A description of the methods used to compile this table and an explanation of the format are given here. This particular table is a city-wide compilation, using the A and Z lists from the directories. (For an explanation of the terminology, see the main chronology page.) Since the A list was only compiled for a very short time, and the Z list only a few years longer, this page is restricted to the early 1930s. Individual tables for the five boroughs can be consulted by clicking the appropriate links.
For each directory listing, to the left of the directory date information,
there is found a notation as to whether the A, B, and Z lists or
only the B and Z lists are extant for the directory with that date.
Clicking on the letter B will switch you to the corresponding borough table
prepared from the B list.

NOTE 1: Hugh Hamilton's list shows GIbraltar 2 as a carry-over from the earlier series, and only GIbraltar 7 as new in Early 1931. However, neither GIbraltar 2 nor 7 is actually shown in the Winter 1930-1931 directory. On the other hand, neither FItzroy 8, FLint 4, LIverpool 8, nor WHitehall 4 is shown in Hugh Hamilton's list, but they are shown in the Winter 1930-1931 directory.
NOTE 2: A listing is given for LOngacre 3 in the Summer 1931 directory, but it is only in the A and Z lists in that one and the Winter 1931-1932 Manhattan directory, and gone from those lists by the Summer 1932 directories (except in the Bronx directory, where it remained, but was gone from the Winter 1932-33 directory). The exchange resumes in the Winter 1936-1937 directory. More research is necessary, though this table reflects these listings.
NOTE 3: Although the Bronx Summer 1931 directory, corrected to April 25, 1931, is supposedly earlier than the directories for the other four boroughs, it shows no entries for FItzroy 8 and FLint 4 in the A list. This seems to be anomalous, but more investigation is necessary. It is rather unlikely that these exchanges were terminated prior to April 25, restarted between April 25 and May 7, and terminated again between June 30 and October 24, 1931, so this table assumes they were either
NOTE 4: The UNderhill 7 exchange never appeared in the Bronx B list; it appeared in A and Z lists for all boroughs in the Winter 1931-1932 directories only.
NOTE 5: Given that the "corrected-to" dates of the Staten Island and Brooklyn directories were only half a month apart, it seems unlikely that the GReenpoint 9 exchange was actually discontinued between those dates. But in the absence of better information, this is the best estimate of the end date for that exchange.
NOTE 6: The PEterboro 8 exchange appears in the Winter 1932-1933 directories for Manhattan and the Bronx. (The copy of the Brooklyn directory for that period was defective, and neither the B nor Z list in that directory could be consulted.) However, all telephones with PEterboro 8 exchanges in the Summer 1932 directory were changed by the Winter 1932-1933 directory. Thus a mid-1932 date would appear to be more correct than the early 1933 date implied by the Manhattan and Bronx Z listings.
NOTE 7: The GEttysburg 9 exchange is not found in the Z lists of the Winter 1932-1933 issue of the Brooklyn directory or the Summer 1933 issue of The Bronx directory. However it is still found in directories for other boroughs with later "corrected-to" dates. In addition, the Winter 1932- 1933 Brooklyn directory includes numbers in this exchange, though they have all been changed to APplegate 6 numbers by the Summer 1933 directory. The ARlington 5, BErkshire 7, LOuisiana 9, and UTrecht 6 exchanges are listed in the Z lists in the Summer 1933 directories for Manhattan and the Bronx, but not for Brooklyn (the borough where they were located). The Summer 1933 Brooklyn directory copy which I examined was defective, and the B list was missing, but it actually contained no The ARlington 5, BErkshire 7, LOuisiana 9, or UTrecht 6 numbers that I could find. Also, The ARlington 5, BErkshire 7, LOuisiana 9, and UTrecht 6 numbers in the Winter 1932-1933 directory were all (as far as could be determined) changed to BEachview 2, WIndsor 8, DIckens 2, and BEachview 2 numbers (respectively) by the Summer 1933 directory. (In the case of ARlington 5 and UTrecht 6, some small number of telephone numbers were changed to BEnsonhurst 6, but they were most commonly changed to BEachview 2.) Thus the early 1933 date would appear to be more correct than the mid-1933 date, despite the Z lists for Manhattan and the Bronx.
NOTE 8: The GLenmore 4 exchange was apparently gone by June 17, 1933, the "corrected-to" date of the Summer 1933 directory for Queens. That it was found in the Z list of corresponding directory for The Bronx (corrected to April 24, 1933) would point to a May 1933 or early June 1933 end date. However, the fact that the Winter 1933-34 issue of The Bronx directory continued to show this exchange in the Z list makes the credibility of its inclusion in the Summer 1933 list doubtful. Thus this table simply lists it for an early 1933 ending date; however, "early 1933" should be understood not as prior to April 24, but as prior to May 10, 1933.
NOTE 9: The POmeroy 6 exchange is shown in the Z lists of a number of the directories dated Summer 1933. However, all subscriber listings seem to have been changed to other numbers by that time (See the change list).
NOTE 10: The DEcatur 2 and HAddingway 3 exchanges are shown in the Z list of the Manhattan directory dated Winter 1934-35. (Other boroughs have not yet been checked.) However, they are absent from the B list of the Brooklyn directory, and all subscriber listings in that directory seem to have been changed to other numbers by that time (See also the change list; note that since the changes to HAddingway were mostly regular, it is not in this list).
NOTE 11: The HUguenot 4 exchange is shown in the Z list of the Manhattan directory dated Summer 1935. (Other boroughs have not yet been checked.) However, all subscriber listings in the Brooklyn directory seem to have been changed to other numbers by that time (See the change list).
